This initiative aligns with governments commitment to improving environmental cleanliness and promoting suitable waste management, as reintroduced by H.E. John Dramani Mahama’s national sanitation day (NSD) programs under the clean Ghana policy.
The exercise aimed to create awareness, encourage community participation in environment health and sanitation activities, promote environmental cleanliness, reduce sanitation-related diseases, and enhance local economic development and tourism. Organized by the district assembly in collaboration with traditional leaders and stakeholders, the event brought together community members, honorable assembly members, unit committees and youth employment agency representatives. The cleanup exercise commenced at 6:00am and ended at 12:30pm with activities including sleeping streets and alleys, distilling chocked gutters and drains, clearing market centers and pavement weeds, cleaning roadside areas to improve visibility for drivers and individuals cleaning their homes, backyards, and drains.
The community collected and disposed of waste, including papers, rubbers and combustible materials which were sent to designated refuse sites. This collective effort demonstrates the community’s commitment to environmental sanitations and promotes behavioral change and community ownership of sanitation activities.
The success of this exercise highlights the importance of collaboration between local authorities, community members, and stakeholders in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. By working together, we can sustain the momentum and ensure a cleaner, healthier future for our communities.
